It doesnt Pay to be KIND =((
Somewhere in January, I was tryin to help one of my factory's worker with her financial issues. She told me: " I dun haf a decent toilet and its not only unhygienic, its almost ruined. So can i borrow money from you to build a toilet somewhere inside my house.."
I felt she really had a good, valid reason to ask for loan and she told me she's gonna pay me back in 10 times installments. She's one of the workers in the factory, not the office area; so she doesnt earn a monthly salary but receives labour wages calculated and distributed in every 2 weeks. Anyway, she ask for a loan thats approximately thrice her monthly earnings and I thought its all good since she promised me that she's goin to pay me every two weeks, after receiving her scheduled wages.
Usually, workers (both office staffs and factory workers) are supposed to apply for a loan directly to the company BUT unfortunately for them, on Jan 2nd 2006, my dad made a new announcement that no more loan should be given under any circumstances because he's really frustrated of how "un-motivated" all our employees are, despite the annual salary increase at the beginning of the year and other incentives/benefits our company has provided them. I told her in advance that she shouldnt tell this to anyone else or return the money to me in PUBLIC coz workers are not supposed to look for me and ask for loans (I'm oso just a worker of the company like all the other staffs around!). I dun want other workers will feel theres nothin wrong borrowing money personally from me...I AM NOT A BANK with unlimited FUNDS and not all my expenses are paid by my dad so I need my income when i wanna buy stuffs!
Guess what? She never keep her promise and tell me shes in need of cash so she cant pay me back yet so shes gonna make it monthly basis payments instead. Aight..i kinda dislike the idea coz that means its gonna be 10 months and i'm scared in case she came up with more reasons and delay her next payments.
Yeah...she did delay her payment. She was supposed to pay me Feb 1st but I had not fly back from Singapore yet at that time. I came back on the forth but she never took the initiative to find me and give me the money and I was too busy tryin to finiz my piled-up work and temporarily replacin my cashier who was sick.
I saw her on my way home somewhere around the 10th Feb and she smiled sheepishly at me while sayin: "where did you go? I thought you havent come back to Indonesia yet thats why i never try to find you. I just give you the money later okay, after my mid-month wages distribution."
Oh Pleazeee...my car was parked just a few meters away from that attendance machine which she has to punch-in twice per day and she told me she aint aware I'm back?? What a lousy lie!!!
She gave me her 1st installment on the 17th...IN FRONT OF EVERYONE ElSE when they were queing up to punch the attendance card on their way home..ARGHHH i was extremely frustrated that time, did she just forgot everythin i told her before i gave her the money?? I had a bad feelin and I was right. tha Next dae, some middle-aged woman I dunno (but she's our worker coz shes wearing the factory uniform) came up to me and asked if she could get a loan. DAMN DAMN DAMN.....now everyone's takin me for granted T T
This aint the worst yet...my dad browsed thru my work agenda to look for some information on some machineries' spareparts we just purchased and he read my "note" which jots down the loan i gave ( i was scared i might forget how much payments she has made so i prepare somethin like an account receivable sheet inside my agenda for future references ). He started to nag:
Dad: Why r u so stoopid, so naive? U r not obligated to lend them anythin!
Me: I just sympathized with her, coz she dun even own a decent toilet in her house
Dad: These workers can make up any reason to get what they want. Does it occur on ur mind that she might be lying on the first place?
Me: --speechless...completely speechless and kept my mouth shut tha rest of the day--
The next day, my dad was walkin around and he went all nuts when he saw the woman i gave the loan to was chit-chatting and didn't does her work. She was sitting in one corner near the machine she was assigned with, busily talkin with 5 other women when its working hours when all of them were supposed to CUT the WOOD! He came back inside the office and intercom me to go inside his office.
Dad: Do you knoe what i've just seen? Ur 'fren' behind wasnt doin her job at all, busily gossiping and not only that, she made 5 other workers enjoyin the gossip time with her! You see what u have done? I told you these workers are all f*%@-ed up, they r not even willin to work properly, let alone repayin ur kindness!!!
Me: --silent mode ON and will be ON till tmrow--
Dad: I hope u learnt the lesson and wont lend money to anyone else here. If they really deserve the loan, the company would not have announce to reject any loan application in the first place...I knoe i did the right thing when i announced that rule so u just stop being too nice to them because it will only destroy me.
